Maerdy Communities First has been working in partnership with Maerdy Junior School, Maerdy Infant School, RCT Environmental Services, GreenCare and Keep Wales Tidy to carry out Environmental Projects in Maerdy. Both schools took part in Litter picks and planting projects. They learnt about environmental issues such as litter, bio degradability and recycling.

MAERDY JUNIOR SCHOOL
On Monday 26th March, Maerdy Junior School’s class 4/5, supported by volunteers, Keep Wales Tidy and RCT Environmental Services undertook a litter-pick around Graig Wen, Glyn Coed, Richard Street Lane, the Estate Shop, the Park and old Tan Y Marion site.

They collected in excess of 50 bags of rubbish, including a car bumper and a broken television set.

On Tuesday 27th the same group of children undertook a planting project led by GREENCARE. They planted up various pots and containers to make a welcoming entrance to the school. Monitors have now been assigned to take care of the new plants.

MAERDY INFANT SCHOOL
Thursday 29th March saw Maerdy Infant School Class 7 enjoy a litter pick and planting session. The class were led up to Miles Street and Edward Street to undertake the litter pick and street clean. The children collected 20+ bags of rubbish.

The groups also planted Vegetables in the raised planters in the school garden and a variety of grasses and flowering plants at the entrance to the school.

WELL DONE TO ALL WHO TOOK PART – AND A BIG THANKYOU TO THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNERS WHO HELPED OUT AT THE SESSIONS.
